For singles

A table for two is an old idea. Overseas, it came back.

Dating apps made it easy to meet people, and then made it hard to actually sit down with one of them. In London, New York, Toronto and a few dozen other cities, people started doing something simpler: they answered a few questions, and someone sat them at a restaurant with people they had never met. Mesa uses that idea in Auckland — one introduction, not a table of six, and if you both say yes we cover your dinner.

People got tired of looking at phones

In the UK, the communications regulator Ofcom found that Tinder, Hinge, Bumble and Grindr all lost users in a single year. The BBC spoke to a founder in Oxford who started an in-person network because of what he called “huge fatigue” with apps: the conversations stay on the surface, and the next face is always a swipe away.

In Cardiff, Lowri Rose told the BBC she had used the apps on and off for eight years. She quit them, and two weeks later she met her fiancé at a dinner party. Meeting someone in a room, rather than through a photo, left her “hopeful and excited to have a little crush.”

That is not a claim that apps never work. Plenty of couples met on them. It is a claim that a lot of people who want a partner are tired of shopping, and they are looking for a first meeting that already looks like a date.

Then dinner with strangers became a thing

A French company called Timeleft started in Lisbon in 2023. You take a quiz, an algorithm sits you with five other people, and the restaurant stays a secret until the day. It is not, strictly, a dating app. The founder told Cosmopolitan that about 80 percent of users are single anyway, and that dinner is the point: you stay two or three hours, you talk, you cannot swipe away.

British Vogue sent a writer who was lonely in London. The Times, the Telegraph and Canada’s Globe and Mail all sat at those tables and wrote about them. In New York, Eater described restaurants built like dinner parties, where strangers share a table and sometimes leave with a number.

Mesa is not Timeleft. Those tables are six people, often for friendship, and you pay for your own meal. Mesa is a matchmaker. We introduce you to one person. If either of you passes, the other person is not told. If you both say yes, we book a table for two at a restaurant in Auckland and we cover the dinner.

Why a meal, not a drink

A drink is easy to leave. A dinner asks you to stay. Psychologists at the University of Leeds watched 792 first dates on the British show First Dates and published the result in the journal Appetite. Couples who shared food said they wanted a second date 93 percent of the time. Couples who did not share said yes 43 percent of the time. The Guardian wrote it up.

The New York Times has spent years treating the first-date restaurant as a real decision, not a backdrop. One piece in 2024 opened with a woman in Brooklyn who will not do drinks, coffee or a walk. “It’s either dinner or no date at all.”

You do not have to share dessert. You do have to sit still long enough to find out if you like how the other person talks when the food arrives.

What Mesa does with that

You join with an email or a New Zealand mobile, a photo, and a few questions. Other members cannot browse you. AI looks for someone who fits what you asked for. A person on our side writes the introduction: one first name, a neighbourhood, a short note.

If you both say yes, we hold a table and we cover meal and drinks, up to $150. The people on Mesa are mostly Latinas and latinos who live in Auckland, and New Zealanders who want a partner on this list. Same questions, same standard.

The first date is a restaurant because that is where this kind of meeting has been working, in public, in other cities, for a few years now.
