10 Latin restaurants in Auckland for a romantic date night

Mesa, Auckland · 2026-09-02

If you want a first date in Auckland that already feels like home for a Latina or a latino — or for a Kiwi who wants to sit in that room — these are the Latin restaurants worth booking. Not a chain round-up. Ten tables where the food is the point, the noise is honest, and you can stay for two hours.

Mesa is a private matchmaker in Auckland. We introduce one person at a time. If you both say yes, we cover dinner at a partner restaurant. The list below is where Latinos in this city actually eat. We do not claim every kitchen here is a Mesa partner.

  1. 01

    Tempero

    Latin bistro · Brazilian-led · Karangahape Road

    352 Karangahape Road, Auckland CBD

The most complete Latin date-night room in the city. Chef Fabio Bernardini cooks Brazilian, Mexican and Peruvian dishes in a 40-seat bistro that won a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand in 2026. Share the acarajé, order a Latin cocktail, and stay. Book.

  2. 02

    Sagrado Cantina

    Mexican · St Kevin’s Arcade

St Kevin’s Arcade, Karangahape Road, Auckland CBD

Andrea and Jorge cook the Mexico they grew up with: nixtamal tortillas pressed to order, lamb birria, mole negro that takes days. The arcade is colourful; the mezcal bar next door, Deza, is where you go if the table went well. A proper date, not a themed night.

  3. 03

    El Sizzling Chorizo

    Argentine asado · Ponsonby

Ponsonby Central, 4 Brown Street, Ponsonby

Argentine barbecue over coals in Ponsonby Central: chimichurri, empanadas, a steak you can split. It is louder than Tempero. That can help a first date. Sit outside if the night is warm. Malbec, not a tasting menu.

  4. 04

    Frida Cocina Mexicana

    Mexican · tequila · Viaduct

Customs Street West, Viaduct Basin, Auckland CBD

A Viaduct Mexican room with a long tequila and mezcal list. Better after dark than at lunch. Book a corner if you want to talk; the waterfront gets busy on Friday. Good when one of you lives in the city and does not want to cross town.

  5. 05

    Tacoteca

Mexican taquería · City Works Depot

1/90 Wellesley Street West, Auckland CBD

Mexican-owned. Tortillas made in the room. City Works Depot is casual, which is useful if a white tablecloth would make the first hour worse. Eat tacos, share a plate, walk to a quieter bar after. An early date, not a three-hour tasting.

  6. 06

    Mexico Ponsonby

    Mexican · Ponsonby

    164 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby

On Ponsonby Road, so you can walk to a second place if you want another hour. The room is familiar to Auckland. That is not a criticism: a first date is easier when neither of you is deciphering the menu. Margaritas, tacos, a booth if they have one.

  7. 07

    Mexico Britomart

    Mexican · Britomart

    Britomart, Auckland CBD

Open late, in the middle of Britomart, seven days. Use it when work ends in the city and neither of you wants to go home first. It is a chain with a proper bar. Sit inside; the laneway is for groups.

  8. 08

    Tropeiro Grill

    Brazilian churrasco · Queen Street

    368 Queen Street, Auckland CBD

Brazilian grill on Queen Street: feijoada, picanha, passadores if they are running the full churrasco. It is more feast than whisper. Take it if you both like a long lunch, or if a quiet bistro would feel like an interview. Tell them it is two people.

  9. 09

    Olas Arepas

    Venezuelan arepas · Ponsonby Central

    Ponsonby Central, Ponsonby

Arepas, not a white tablecloth. Useful for a daytime first meeting, or for two people who would rather eat with their hands than sit through a tasting. Grey Lynn and Ponsonby are a short walk. Do not expect a sommelier. Do expect corn, cheese, and a short queue at lunch.

  10. 10

    Taco Loco Cantina

    Mexican cantina · Mount Albert

179 Mount Albert Road, Mount Albert

A neighbourhood cantina, not a CBD performance. If one of you lives west, this is closer than Ponsonby and less of a scene. Tacos, a cold beer, a room that does not mind if you stay. First dates do not have to be in the city centre.

A drink is easy to leave. A dinner asks you to stay. That is why a Latin table works as a first date in Auckland: the food gives you something to talk about, and the room is already yours.

Questions

What is the best Latin restaurant in Auckland for a date?

For a sit-down date night, Tempero on Karangahape Road is the strongest Latin room in Auckland right now: owner-run, booked, and built for two people who will stay. Sagrado Cantina is the Mexican alternative if you want mezcal after.

Does Mesa cover dinner at these restaurants?

No. This is a list of Latin restaurants in Auckland, not Mesa’s partner list. When two people on Mesa both say yes, we book a table at a partner restaurant and cover dinner up to $150. The partner rooms are on our restaurants page.
